This morning I logged in to my eBay account to check on the shipping status of a few items I ordered recently, and was greeted with a message informing me that today is my 7 year anniversary. Wow. Have I really been with eBay for seven years? And on the other hand, have I really been with eBay for just 7 years?

Is it funny that I vaguely remember a few of my early purchases? One was a sterling silver mother’s ring that featured an open area within the embrace of a mother and child; the open area was shaped like a heart, and the ring came with interchangeable marbles of varying colors and finishes, so I could have a custom ring every day. Granted, it was no tungsten ring, but nevertheless the ring was really neat, and I enjoyed its uniqueness. Sadly, I no longer have that ring. It was my first “Mother’s Ring”. And my second? I lost it sometime this past summer. :( Maybe for Mother’s Day this year my husband will give me my third and final one?

Of all of the technological inventions I’ve enjoyed, I’d have to say that the internet is the best one of all. I mean, what can’t you find on the internet? Once upon a time I had to turn on the television and flip to the Weather Channel and wait for my region to come on in order to find out that day’s forecast – now I can check instantly from my computer, iPod Touch, cell phone, or one of the kids’ iPads. Once upon a time I didn’t know if school would be closed for a snow day until I checked the news alerts on television – now I just wait for a text message from the school announcement system. Once upon a time I’d have to go store to store in order to find a plus size dress – now I just search online, and then I can order it from an online merchant, or call around to local stores (with numbers found online, of course) to verify that it’s in stock. Once upon a time I’d have no clue what kind of wedding rings orange county there were, unless I called them (and paid for insane long-distance calls) and requested that they mail a catalog – now I just check their website.

Three cheers for the internet!

Mental Floss’s recent article, 11 Sounds That Your Kids Have Probably Never Heard, was only slightly depressing. I know a lot of those sounds, though not all of them, but one thing is for sure: my 7 year old daughter and my 5 year old son have certainly never heard any of them. And it’s probably safe to say that my 16 year old brother hasn’t heard any of them, either.

I grew up with a rotary telephone (my grandmother’s), TVs that had knobs for channel changers (ours), and listening to records on both my mother’s and my grandfather’s record players. Of course, by the time I was ten we also had an answering machine (it recorded onto cassette tapes!), we finally got a television with a remote, and by the time I hit my teen years we had cordless telephones.

On a related note, the other day my daughter asked me if televisions existed when I was a kid. Say what?! Child, I’m only 27 – yes, televisions existed when I was a kid! (I should have made her little head explode by informing her that they also existed when my mom – her grandmother – was a kid.)

I’ve recently begun using TweetDeck for the simple fact that I can display multiple columns (very handy for distinguish my “personal” Twitter list from my “bloggers who blather on only about giveaways and product reviews but I must follow them in order to qualify to win cool shit” list). One simple trick that alluded me until this morning was how to rearrange the display of columns within the TweetDeck window. Fortunately, the solution couldn’t be more simple:

Simply click the arrows located at the bottom of each column to move them to the left or right. :)

I’m not usually one to get excited about smartphone releases, especially given how often such events take place. Nevertheless, I have to admit to being very interested in the imminent release of the new Samsung Galaxy Nexus, not least because this period will also mark the release of the Motorola RAZR and HTC Rezound. The tech-world will essentially have its own little Clash of the Titans, with each handset offering various changes and upgrades to previous models – some similar, others not so. One would be forgiven for forgetting all about the iPhone 4S launch in the midst of all this commotion.

With that, it must be added, Samsung are playing an interesting hand here. Hype surrounding this phone has been great, however Samsung themselves have done little to really promote the release of the handset. So why bother with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus? If Samsung are going to play hard to get, why should we bother saving our money for them? Here are several reasons why you may wish to get your name into Santa’s good books before the month’s out:

The Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy S II have been phenomenal successes, with the Galaxy S II picking up Phone of the Year from T3 Magazine, giving iPhone users worldwide the two-finger salute

The Galaxy Nexus offers a hefty 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and will be the first ‘true’ 1280 x 720p screen. Looking up the more alluring aspects of the internet on your phone has never been quicker or more fun

The face unlock feature makes you feel like you’re in Star Wars, or wherever your futuristic space fantasy of choice is set. Incidentally, some individuals have pointed out that by showing a static photo of the owner’s face to the phone, it allows you to gain access, thus thwarting the security system. I somehow feel that if someone is going to the trouble of sourcing a picture of you to infiltrate your phone, you probably have bigger problems to worry about than merely having your handset half-inched.

The new operating system is called ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’. Need I say more? So confident are Google in their new OS Android 4.0 that they’ve named it after a delicious treat that everyone fantasies about (at some point) but few have the pleasure of ever tasting. You definitely know a company has its priorities right when it names its products after a pregnant woman’s craving.

So there you have it. Galaxy Nexus contracts are looking set for a strong release, with a host of powerful features to justify the stack of units it will shift in the run-up to Christmas. Old Saint Nick will have no problem navigating his way to your home with his reindeer guided by your Google Maps-equipped Nexus.

At first I didn’t get what all the hype was about, but now? I SO see what it’s all about. To me, Pinterest is the perfect combination of a social bookmarking site and a wishlist site. I love that you use “pins” and “boards”. I love the visual layout of the site, I love how everything is presented. From a social media standpoint, I love how I can automatically share new boards and pins on Facebook and Twitter. And from a user’s standpoint, I love the handy “Pin It” bookmarklet that allows me to pin anything on any website, without having to open up a separate window and go through the hassle of manually copying and pasting things.

I’d love to share the Pinterest love, but unfortunately I don’t have any options for sending invites. Sorry! :(

For the longest time I have relied on iTunes for my music listening needs. But the obvious downside to using iTunes is that I’m not exposed to new music — this has become glaringly apparent over the past year, when riding with a friend in his car or being in stores where music is played has exposed me to songs I’ve never heard before. As I’m typing this, I am listening to a custom Maroon 5 station that I put together with I Heart Radio. So far I like I Heart Radio, with the exception of there not being a dedicated piece of software for it. I know all the rage these days is to have everything within the browser, but I’m a little obsessive over my browser tabs, and thus I’m annoyed to have to have one open at all times for my music.

Right off the bat, one thing I love about I Heart Radio is the Station Control feature. I can use the slider to choose amongst having the most familiar songs played, a healthy mix of familiar and not-so-familiar songs played, or have completely new, unexpected (but same genre) songs thrown into the mix. For now I’m a middle of the road kind of girl, but that may change as I use this app more.

I’ll probably rely on iTunes a lot of the time, especially if I have a particular artist in mind, but for variety, I think I’ll be going with I Heart Radio. Right now I can enjoy them from my browser, on my Android phone, on my iPod Touch, and on my son’s iPad 2 — here’s to hoping I’ll eventually be able to enjoy I Heart Radio from a dedicated software program!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Now, with the sudden explosion of app-heavy “book readers” — I use quotes because honestly, something that is touch screen, connects to the internet, gives you apps to download, plays music, and provides book reading functionality is nothing more than a tablet that can double as a book reader — those “standard” book readers are suddenly cheap. Really cheap. I gave my brother a used (but in near-new condition) Nook as an early Christmas. I found it on eBay for just $40. Whoo hoo! I’m happy at the low price, and my brother is happy to have a decent e-book reader (FYI? The Literarti Wireless Reader by The Sharper Image is a piece of crap. Don’t buy it, ever!). Booting Apple OS X in safe mode couldn’t be any easier:

Power off your computer or laptop, if it’s still on

Turn on your computer or laptop

Immediately after you hear the tone indicating Apple OS X is starting up, hold down the shift key

Continue holding down the shift key until the gray spinning indicator appears beneath the apple logo, then release

Wait for your operating system to load – this may take longer than usual

And that’s it! Now you’re in safe mode, and hopefully any changes you made rendering Apple OS X inoperable will have been undone.
